Garbage Disposal Repair and Installation in Phoenix

A disposal is a simple appliance that gets asked to do a lot. When it stops, the problem is usually one of a handful of things, and we can tell you which one over the phone in most cases. We carry replacement units on the truck, so if yours is done we can have a new one in before we leave.

What's Wrong With It

  • Hums but won't spin: something's jammed in the grind chamber. Sometimes freed with the hex key on the bottom; sometimes it's a bone or a ring that has to come out from above.
  • Completely silent: the reset button has tripped (bottom of the unit), the breaker's off, or the motor has failed.
  • Leaking from the bottom: the internal seal has failed. That's a replacement.
  • Leaking at the top or side: the sink flange or the dishwasher/drain connection. Repairable.
  • Drains slowly or backs up: the drain line past the disposal is clogging, not the disposal itself. See drain cleaning.
  • Loud grinding or rattling: a loose or broken impeller, or foreign object.

Repair or Replace

A jammed unit, a tripped reset, or a leak at a connection is a repair. A failed motor or a leak from the body of the unit is a replacement; the parts cost more than a new disposal. If your unit is more than eight or ten years old and having problems, replacement is almost always the better call, and a new one is quieter and grinds better than what it's replacing.

Installation Done Right

We install disposals from every major brand, including units you've purchased yourself. Installation includes a new sink flange and putty seal, a new discharge tube and trap where needed, connection to the dishwasher drain with the knockout removed (a step that gets missed more than you'd think), and a check of the electrical connection or plug. We run it, check for leaks and make sure it drains cleanly before we go.

A Few Things Not to Put Down It

Grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, fibrous vegetables like celery and corn husks, pasta and rice in quantity, and anything that isn't food. Run cold water while it's on and for a few seconds after. Ice cubes now and then clean the chamber. That's the whole maintenance program.

Questions We Get Asked

Can I fix a jammed disposal myself?

Often. Turn it off, use the hex key on the bottom to work the flywheel back and forth, remove whatever's stuck with tongs (never your hand), and press the reset button. If it still hums, call us.

How long does replacement take?

About an hour for a standard swap.

What size disposal do I need?

One-half horsepower handles most households. Three-quarter or one horsepower for heavy use or a large family. We'll recommend based on how you cook.

Does a leaking disposal need to be replaced?

Only if it's leaking from the body. Leaks at the flange or the drain connection are repaired.
