Water Line Repair & Replacement

Water Line Repair & Replacement in Phoenix

The main water line runs underground from the meter to your house, and when it fails you get low pressure, a soggy yard, or a bill that makes no sense. We repair and replace it, meter to house.

Main Water Line Repair in Phoenix

Your water service line is the pipe you pay the least attention to and rely on the most. In older Phoenix neighborhoods it's often galvanized steel or thin-wall copper that's been in the ground for 40 years or more; in newer ones it can be poly pipe that's become brittle. Ground movement, tree roots, corrosion and the occasional shovel all take their toll. When the line fails, you're paying for water that's soaking into the dirt.

Underground work is where we do a lot of our business. We locate the line, find the leak, and repair or replace it with the right pipe, at the right depth, with a proper connection at both ends.

Signs of a Water Line Problem

  • Water pressure dropped throughout the whole house, not just one fixture
  • A wet or unusually green strip of yard between the street and the house
  • Water pooling near the meter box or the front hose bib
  • The meter runs with everything in the house shut off
  • Discolored or gritty water from every tap (a corroding line)
  • A hissing sound near where the line enters the house

Repair or Replace

A single break in an otherwise sound line can be spot-repaired: we excavate at the leak, cut out the damaged section, and splice in new pipe with the correct fittings. If the line is old galvanized, has failed before, or the leak is one of several weak spots, replacement is the better investment. A new line in PEX or copper, properly bedded and buried at code depth, should outlast the house.

We'll locate the leak first, then give you a written price for each option and our recommendation.

How We Replace a Water Line

Locate the existing line and mark utilities. Shut off at the meter. Excavate a trench (or, where the run is straight and the soil allows, pull the new line through with minimal digging). Install new pipe from the meter connection to the house entry, with a new shut-off valve at the house so you have one that works. Pressure-test the line. Backfill in compacted lifts, restore the surface, and turn the water back on with a full flush. Most residential water line replacements are done in a day.

While We're There

A new water line is the right time to check your pressure regulator and add one if the house doesn't have it. Phoenix city pressure can run high, and a regulator protects every appliance, valve and fixture downstream. We'll test your pressure and tell you where it stands.

Questions We Get Asked

Who is responsible for the water line, me or the city?

In Phoenix the city owns the meter and everything on the street side. The pipe from the meter to your house is the homeowner's.

Will my yard be torn up?

A spot repair is one hole. A full replacement is a narrow trench, or less if we can pull the new line. We restore what we disturb.

How long will I be without water?

Usually a few hours for a repair and most of a working day for a replacement. We'll give you a window before we start.

What pipe do you use?

PEX or copper, depending on the run and your preference. Both are rated for underground use when installed correctly. We don't use poly.

Can you do the repair the same day you find the leak?

Often, yes. If the leak is located early in the day and the repair is a simple one, we finish it in the same visit.
